Tricholoma equestre

Yellow Knight / Man on Horseback

Coniferous (especially pine forests), rarely deciduous forests. Summer (rarely), autumn (until the frost).

Fruiting bodies medium-sized, rarely large. Cap 3-7 (12) cm across, convex-flattened, when old horizontal, with an umbo, fibrous, scaly, greenish-yellow, yellowish-greenish, greenish-brown, slimy, dry in dry weather, covered with sand. Gills greenish-yellow, yellow, adnate, free. Stem 2-6x1-3 cm, of uniform thickness, usually the colour of the gills. Flesh thick, firm, juicy, whitish, yellowish, with a pleasant smell and taste. Characteristic features: mostly a mushroom of dry pine forests. Grows in groups. Edible, a mushroom much loved and eaten by everyone. In 2004 the press wrote about the Yellow Knight as a poisonous mushroom, but this is unbelievable and incomprehensible. Nothing has been heard of poisonings by the Yellow Knight in Lithuania.
