Suillus bovinus

Jersey Cow Bolete / Bovine Bolete

Sandy pine forests. September-November.

Medium-sized mushrooms. Cap grows up to 8 cm, less often up to 12 cm across, very dark yellow, yellowish-brown. Tubes up to 1 cm long, greyish-yellowish, when old greenish-brownish. Stem 2-10x 1-2 cm, the colour of the cap, tough; several fruiting bodies are often fused at the base. Flesh yellowish-brownish, when old with a pink tinge, very tough, mild in taste. Characteristic features: very tough fruiting bodies, often several growing in one place; in Dzūkija it is also called nakcižieda ("night bloomer"), because the fruiting bodies supposedly glow at night. Grows mostly in dry, sandy pine forests, in large groups. A tasty mushroom; old fruiting bodies are very tough and should not be used for food.
