Silky Rosegill

Volvariella bombycina – Edible

Silky Rosegill (Volvariella bombycina)

Deciduous trees: parks, squares, roadsides, less often forests. Summer, autumn.

Fruiting bodies medium-sized, large. Cap 8-12 cm across, also grows considerably larger. At first bell-shaped, later convex, bluntly conical, eventually flattened, with an umbo, white, silky-shaggy, hairy, fibrous. Young gills white, old ones pinkish, free. Stem up to 12 cm and longer, without a ring, with a large, white, lobed volva. Flesh white, soft, with a woody smell and a pleasant taste. Characteristic features: fruiting bodies fibrous, growing only in hollows and injured places of deciduous trees. In anomalous cases the cap grows up to 23 cm across; one such was found in Druskininkai. Appears singly or a few fruiting bodies together. Edible, pleasant in taste.
