Fruiting bodies small. Cap 3-5 cm across, rarely larger, dirty greyish-brown, the central part chocolate, darker, the margin paler, greyish-cream, fibrous, scaly. Gills greyish-brown, adnate. Stem 3-7 cm long, sometimes longer, up to 1 cm thick, brownish. Flesh brownish, thin, bitter-tasting. Characteristic features: a sharp, unpleasant aroma (of old radishes, gas).
