Bog Milkcap
Lactarius lacunarum

Deciduous and mixed forests. End of summer, autumn.
Medium-sized fruiting bodies. Cap 3-6 cm across, convex when young, soon raised-flattened, flattened, with or without an umbo, slightly depressed, surface unzoned, orange-brown, yellowish-orange, brick-red. Gills whitish, the colour of the cap; the stem hollow when old. Flesh thin, slightly acrid-tasting, with white milk that turns yellow on contact with air. Characteristic features: very similar to the mild milkcap (L. mitissimus) and the pale milkcap (L. thejogalus), but the bog milkcap prefers the vicinity of birch and grassy places. Grows singly or in groups in mixed or purely deciduous forests. Food value unknown. Common, abundant in places.
