Pholiota adiposa

Sticky Scalycap

Trunks, snags and stumps of deciduous trees. Autumn, summer (rarely).

Fruiting bodies medium-sized, rarely large. Cap 5–8 (10-15) cm across, flattened when mature, with or without a blunt umbo, slimy, yellowish-brown, scaly. Gills pale yellow, old ones greenish-brownish-brown, crowded, adnate. Stem 5–8 (10)x0.5-1.5 cm, thickening towards the base, slimy, scaly. Flesh yellowish-brown, soft, not bitter, without any particular smell. Characteristic features: very similar to the golden scalycap, but the latter's fruiting bodies are not slimy and its spores are larger (8-10x5-6 pm). Grows singly or in small groups, in summer and autumn, on deciduous trees, most often on aspen and black alder stumps, trunks and snags. Food value unknown. Rarer than the golden scalycap.
