Leafy Brain

Rotting wood of deciduous and coniferous trees. Autumn, winter, spring.

Fruiting bodies medium-sized. Clusters 3-10 (12) cm across, wrinkled, irregularly plate-like, folded into lobes; when dried out they shrink; brain-like, watery, brown, pinkish-brown, with a violet tinge. Flesh of jelly-like consistency, pale brown, without a particular smell or taste. Grows on fallen deciduous and coniferous trunks, stumps, snags, larger branches. Not afraid of frosts. Not rare. Eaten in some countries; of low value, suitable for adding variety to salads.
