Turkeytail

Trametes versicolor – Inedible

Turkeytail (Trametes versicolor)

Old stumps, windfalls and snags of deciduous trees. Spring, summer, autumn (winter).

Annual fruiting bodies, up to 12 cm across, a rosette of round, fan-shaped caps, usually fused together in overlapping tiers. Cap surface velvety, hairy, with concentric yellowish, brownish, brown, reddish-brown, bluish and greyish-black zones. Tubes white, up to 2 pm long. Flesh white, thin, leathery.

Grows in forests and parks, sometimes in gardens, on dead deciduous wood.

Causes a white rot of the wood. Very common. Sometimes the rosettes of caps touch or even fuse, covering the whole stump and decorating it as if with beautiful large buttons that inspire admiration.
