Wet Rot Fungus (Cellar Fungus)

Coniophora puteana

Wet Rot Fungus (Cellar Fungus)

On rotten coniferous and deciduous wood. All year round, especially autumn.

Fruiting bodies spreading (resupinate). When young they are small, irregularly round, later several grow together and spread into a large, pale brown, brown, brownish-violet, fleshy film that separates easily from the substrate, its surface with brown granules and small warts, and the margins loose, downy, white. Grows in (abandoned) wooden buildings, timber stores without ventilation, and in forests on windfalls and stumps. One of the most dangerous house fungi, destroying wood and causing much damage. Very common.
