Slimy Spike

Gomphidius glutinosus

Slimy Spike

Coniferous forests, especially mossy spruce forests. August-October.

Fruiting bodies medium-sized. Cap 3-8 (12) cm across, very slimy, greyish-brown, brownish-violet, when old with black spots. Young gills are greyish, old ones spotted black, almost black, distant, thick, forked. Stem 3—9x1—2.3 cm in size, greyish, greyish-brownish, beautifully yellow at the base, near the gills with a ring zone, quite slimy. Characteristic features: cap and stem very slimy, flesh fairly thick, soft, white, pleasant in taste. Grows singly or a few fruiting bodies together, mostly in spruce forests. Edible, pleasant in taste, only it turns black when boiled. Not rare. Adding a little citric acid when boiling - it will blacken less.
