Spotted Milkcap / Yellow Milkcap

Coniferous forests, especially damp, grassy spruce forests. Summer, autumn.

Fruiting bodies large, robust. Cap grows up to 25 cm across, with concentric zones, fibrous, fleshy, slimy, chrome yellow, lemon yellow, yellowish-ochre. Gills whitish, later brownish-ochre, spotted brown, adnate, slightly decurrent. Stem 3—7x1.5—3.5 cm, yellow, slimy, spotted. Characteristic features: flesh yellowish, darkening when broken or cut, with a sharp, burning taste; the milk is white and quickly turns yellow on reacting with air. The largest milkcap of spruce forests. Grows in groups. Uncommon, edible; although listed in the Red Data Book of Lithuania, it may be collected, because it is widespread and abundant.
