Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum)

On dead wood of deciduous, rarely coniferous trees. From early spring to late autumn, even in winter.

Fruiting bodies spreading, usually forming semicircular caps 0.5-2 cm across, attached to the substrate by the side. Caps leathery, covered with dense, coarse hairs, grey, brownish in the middle, yellow towards the edges, with barely visible concentric zones. Hymenophore smooth, pale yellow, ochre, greyish-yellowish. Characteristic features: underside of the cap yellow, smooth. Grows on standing and fallen dead deciduous trees, branches, snags, more rarely stumps, also occurring on conifers. Causes a white rot of the wood. Very common. A good forest sanitiser. In rare cases a biotroph.
